Oral cancer screenings are an important part of good dental care. People who smoke or drink alcohol heavily should have their mouth screened on a regular basis to detect cancer. However, oral cancer is not restricted to smokers and drinkers: anyone can have it. People who are in the sun a lot are more prone to lip cancer. The purpose of oral cancer screenings is to find cancerous cells and have them removed before it spreads or develops into something more serious. A typical screening involves looking into your mouth to find red or white lesions. Running a gloved finger along the inside of the mouth will help identify lumps or irregularities. In some cases, you can rinse your mouth with a special dye or shine UV-light inside your mouth to identify abnormal cells. If cancer is suspected, a biopsy may be required for further screening.
